While working at Herman Miller in the 1970s, designer Ray Wilkes experimented with the (then) new technique of injecting foam into custom-made molds. The result was uniquely shaped, rounded cushions that form Wilkes Modular Seating.
45 Years Young
Recently, design enthusiasts and vintage collectors have developed a fondness for Wilkes’ fondly dubbed “Chiclet” sofa. This renewed interest inspired Herman Miller to reissue the sofa in 2021.
British Ingenuity
British designer Ray Wilkes graduated with first-class honors from the Royal College of Art in London and began working at Herman Miller in the 1970s after a stint at George Nelson & Associates and with designer Harvey Probber in Rhode Island.
Time for an
Encore
After the sofa’s debut in 1976, it was fondly nicknamed the “Chiclet” sofa, referring to the popular rounded tile-shaped pieces of gum. Today, the sofa and armchair have been rediscovered by design enthusiasts and collectors, appearing regularly on the secondary market. We’re proud to reissue the collection for a new generation of #raywilkes fans.
