Description

People often ask where they can find the bold ads and graphic artworks on the walls of our office spaces, which prompted us to reprint select pieces from our archives. The Watermelon Picnic Poster (1971) was one of 20 posters designed for Herman Miller’s annual company picnic, and the first assignment given to Stephen Frykholm, who’d just been hired as the first in-house graphic designer. Frykholm went on to have a 45-year career at Herman Miller and his series of Picnic Posters is now included in the permanent collections of MoMA and many other museums worldwide.

          • Keep out of direct sunlight. To maintain a high shine finish, use polishes recommended for acrylics.
          • Do not use window cleaning fluids, scouring compounds, gritty cloths, or strong solvents such as alcohol, ammonia, or acetone as they may damage the finish.
            Designers

            Steve Frykholm

In 1970, Herman Miller hired its first in-house graphic designer, a bright-eyed Cranbrook graduate named Steve Frykholm. Among his initial assignments was the task of designing a poster to promote the company’s annual picnic. Little did he know that the resulting poster would spark an ambitious series that has since made its way into countless museum collections and firmly landed him on the short list of Herman Miller’s illustrious design alumni.
